Hey, we got some new music videos/live performance videos/TV appearance(s) videos in the world of indie and alternative rock. Some of your favorites are releasing these cinematic productions in rock 'n' roll fashion, so here they are, easily laid out for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy:
Hey guys, just two quick notes here that are buzz-worthy and deserving of a post. I've been awake for too long so I'm making this quick. (Update on college life: senior year is ROUGH).Note #1: Death Cab For Cutie is doing a song for the new film in the Twilight saga, New Moon, which we've briefly covered here before. Are vampires uncool yet? Anyway, you can preview the song for 40 seconds at the soundtrack's website, here. Likes this! Enjoy.Clip from South Park
Note #2: Johnny Lydon/Johnny Rotten/ex-Sex Pistols front man/hater of Kele (Bloc Party) has revived Pubic Image Limited, with some new members (apparently), for a number of Christmas shows in jolly, old England. They had a popular run in the early 80's post-punk scene, so I guess it makes sense for the band to come back into the lime light after 17 years of not performing... I wonder how this will play out. Bullocks. That's all for now, folks.
Our return was not quite like Beatle Mania, but it still feels nice to be here again.
The school year is officially underway. Classes started for all those who have night classes last night, but for the rest of the us, it's business as usual for the start of the Fall 2009 semester today. Jim is one lucky duck - he's got no classes on Tuesdays or Thursdays. I have it pretty easy myself; only one morning class both days (9:30-10:50) and then the KUR general meetings at 11. (Our other days, however... we are swamped with classes and work. Not fun). KUR had it's first executive board meeting last night at 6, and the first general meeting was today (like previously stated). Good to see the old gang today. We have a ton of newbies, which is awesome! Hopefully they all stick with it and really enjoy the college radio style as much as the rest of us do. I felt a little apprehensive leading the meeting today. I'm not sure why; I'm a pretty open guy, not too shy; maybe the title of "president" and the potential responsibility is just freaking me out. I'm sure it gets easier to manage with time. But anyway, we're sponsoring a ton of great events and organizations, as well as introducing new ways to hear us. We've got ticket contests, live music, special on-air features, and so much more to come. Check it all out on our official web site: kur.kutztown.edu. This may be the year, folks. The year we finally get our FCC License. License, please! What else have we done since we all moved in? Granted, Jim's been here for two weeks already, so I'm sure everything is routine for him now. For me, move-in is going fine. We all partied our asses off and spent way more money than we should have this past weekend. You only live once, right? So why not splurge a bit! Our hangovers have subsided and we've all cleansed ourselves of any remaining sin, so now we're ready. It's the new year. It's time for college life all over again.
Welcome to the latest installment of this unofficial mini series of posts. We've already had a few posts about the past attempts by cable networks to return music videos to television. The sad truth is that for the most part, music videos are obsolete on any reasonable time on either MTV, MTV2, VH1, Fuse, (BET?), or any other one of the major channels. My theory: once the creators of MTV retired or passed away, young guns came in, money-hungry and without morals, turned MTV from a well-respected music station to a reality TV circus. It's all about getting paid, am I right? This site does a great job of updating readers on the current state of rock 'n' roll on MTV. It's one of my favorites. But here's the scoop on one network and it's newest test try.
First of all, when Fuse TV, once MuchMusic (Canada), busted onto the scene in 2003, they promised, no, they VOWED to be better than MTV, to restore music to television, in a pretty stern bash campaign. Since then, they've managed to fire pretty much all their staff, add garbage films into their daily line-up, go through a slue of failed live shows, and create some of the worst TV shows of all time (Pants Off, Dance Off, Rad Girls, and The Whitest Kids U'Know). So - what was so much better about Fuse than MTV again? Christ.
Here's a little bit saving grace: a new show that airs Thursday nights at 7 PM and Sundays, as re-runs, at 12:30 AM, on Fuse, called Distortion. It's supposed to be "Your guide to the best of indie and alt rock". I'd like to change that to "Your guide to shitty Rock Band video game references and the biggest tool of a VJ to ever hold the occupation". It's run-time: 1 hour. The amount of videos they aired on the premiere: 6. SIX?!? I can't believe how hypocritical Fuse has been throughout it's entire lifespan. Steven Smith, host, spent some time interviewing guests Rise Against, a band I don't listen to often but one that I do respect. Then they had random clips featuring the cast of the new mockumentary Paper Heart at ComiCon, talking to geeks and asking them what their favorite love songs were (embarrassing).
All in all, it was... a start? I just hope for better episodes to come. Here are the whopping six videos they played:Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Oh shit, didn't see that coming, what a shocker...)
Rise Against - "Hero Of War"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Heads Will Roll"
Rancid - "Last One To Die"
Silversun Pickups - "Panic Switch" (Prone to epileptic seizures during viewing)
Green Day - "21 Guns"So the music videos, as a whole, weren't bad by any means. In fact, I enjoyed them. I just wish there could've been more (and I really didn't need to hear pre-teens ask Rise Against stupid questions). So what's next for Fuse's Distortion? Hopefully a new VJ. And Sienna Miller and Channing Tatum as guests from the new G.I. Joe movie for next week. Come on. Leave it at bands and artists and that's it. Ugh.
Distortion airs every Thurday at 7 PM on Fuse TV.
Remember this guy? Sure you don't. His name's Chris Isaak. He had that tune a while ago..."Wicked Game"...you know ("Now I--- wanna fall in love"). Definitely on early 90's VH1 formats and maybe even 120 Minutes. Okay, so apparently, he's done some music show-type hosting in the past, like the short-lived '02-'05 "Chris Isaak Show" on Showtime. Apparently, no one watched that. Sad. But, there's hope for this has been again: another show! It's the year of the comeback! Again! This brings my tally up, to like, 3 now.
Isaak is back with a glimmering ray of hope for music on TV. Not music videos, though. Boo. However, this is more of an interview type session deal. His show is simply titled, "The Chris Isaak Hour" on Biography. Biography? I don't think most Americans even get that network, let alone watch it. So once again, this will fall on deaf ears (and blind eyes). But this show is more of an in-depth analysis of artists, so I guess Bio was a good choice of network. Hell, it's probably the only one who gave it a shot. Any who, Bill Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins will be appearing on the first show, playing some tunes and talking to the Is-man. He's on the bill among other producers and no names. Oh! Also, 3-time Grammy winner Trisha Yearwood, whoever that is. So that should be interested. Something to watch if you're bored and craving music on TV (like we ALL are). The show premieres tonight on Bio at...10 PM! (Had to do some research there).
Sorry I am a day late, but I was literally just watching this video for 25 hours straight, being confused.
Oh and NEWSFLASH: Björk is weird.
