Two.

2 DAYS. UNTIL NMTM KICKS OFF ONCE AGAIN!

I wrote enough today. Now I'm tired and lazy. In a nutshell, R.E.M. is one of the greatest alternative rock bands of all time and you can bet your bottom dollar that we'll play they're old & new music on our show. Roam through the blog and you'll learn enough about the band and my obsession with them. We are so close, people! Two days!

(Real) Music On MTV!...Hits...: Oasis' Hitlist

Take. Oasis.

It's a snow day here in the most agreeable town of Kutztown, Pennsylania. I wasn't sure if I'd have the day off, usually because our school loves to make the kids suffer and travel in harsh and sometimes live threatening conditions. Very typical. However, I took a chance on my scheduling and stayed up late last night. Around 1:30 AM, I turned over to MTV Hits, because I thought to myself, "Hey, sometimes you get lucky; even with MTV." For those who are unawarem MTV Hits plays all music videos, however, it's a digital cable network and not many people get to experience it. But believe me, you're truly not missing out. It's pretty much Akon's, T-Pain's, Ludacris', or Lily Wayne's playlists; all day, every day. MTV loves sucking their dicks. Needless to say, those playlists are utterly terrible; same repetitive bullshit, stolen beats, shitty lyrics about nothing important, etc. But last night, I felt lightning strike. The shock of the lightning: Oasis' playlist (figures it's only on MTV Hits at 1 AM...). The Oasis of today!

I was struggling to stay awake because Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually my busiest days on campus. But I felt inspired to stay up and see what Oasis had in store for the viewers. This was a once in a lifetime treat (isn't that sad?). So I started watching, and from what I can remember, Liam Gallagher, Noel Galllagher, and Andy Bell were the only guys interviewed, talking about their picks for music videos and things like that. It was cool to see the guys lounge around, cuss, and all the jazz, because they really don't get any air time on American television anymore. They had some decent picks, some things I hadn't heard before. Here's what I can recall:

Kasabian - Club Foot
Ian Brown - F.E.A.R.
Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever
Pink Floyd - Money
The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash
The Smiths - This Charming Man
*Noel goes, "The next song is by The Smiths. Because Morrissey's a fucking genius. Marr's a genius. And here it is."
The La's - There She Goes

After that, I think I fell asleep. I woke up this morning to my TV blaring The Pussycat Dolls. MTV Hits disappoints me. But last night's little escapade seemed like more of an intern's meddling than a planned program. Regardless, I enjoyed it very much. Here's a vintage video of Oasis prefoming "Supersonic" on 120 Minutes, though it's played on MTV2 (even that is disgustingly horrible now, as well). Check out Noel's expression and his stance. Priceless. Oasis on MTV Hits last night was exactly what the band is: refreshing.

Redux!: NMTM Returns (1st Poster Of '09)

Oh, how good it feels to be back! We've been raving on this blog about the return of our show, Never Mind the Mainstream, but here's an actual preview! Just look at that Photoshop masterpiece. I didn't learn much in computer class growing up, but Photoshop always held a special place in my brain. I knew it would come in handy someday, even if it doesn't further my education. Eat it, middle school computers after lunch period!

So we're coming back on the airwaves, Friday 6-8 PM only on KUR. The links and additional information are all around you; it's not difficult to hear us. We're bringing the underground to your speakers. Your welcome.

Here's what we got lined up for you on our first program of the new year: some fresh Lily Allen (I don't care what you think, she's a beauty), fresh Killers, vintage Clash, and semi-vintage Pavement (the 90's aren't classic yet). We also got a slue of oldies and newbies from the best alternative and indie rock artists in the game. Plus a killer mash-up and retro background beats - very funky. Guarenteed.

And as always, call into the studio at (610)-683-4058; or IM us at KURRequest. We love to hear from our listeners, whether they're sober or drunk or full of life or a vegetable. You do not want to miss this epic return! Jim A. and MP are back! w00t!

Three.

The ones who love us best, are the ones we'll lay to rest.
The ones that love us least, are the ones we'll die to please.

3 DAYS UNTIL NMTM AIRS!!!

Paul Westerberg. Before he wrote great guitar rock about love and growing older for his solo records, he wrote punk and later post-punk alternative anthems for a generation of rough and tumble kids in the 80's. As lead singer and guitarist of The Replacements, Paul and co. are regarded as one of the most influential alternative bands of the era (if not for The 'Mats, you could guarentee there wouldn't be a Green Day...well, old Green Day. New Green Day is the worst unpatriotic and annoying band I've heard all decade long. Slight exaggeration...). The Replacements were at their best when they realized that punk rock was not their breed and that the best music came from their most vulnerable states (and once they put down the booze, but they were fun wasted, too). They're mid 80's records foreshadow grunge rock and every angsty but heartfelt genre to follow. Foo Fighters? Paul Westerberg: an excellent musician, an experienced drinker, and one hell of a showman. Kudos on growing up, Paul, but we'll always love your immature antics. They will remain timeless.

We're only 3 Days away from the first show of the semester!!!

Five.

We are 5 DAYS away from our return!

Yes Number 5, only 5!

I'll post one of these pictures every day until Friday, the 30th. Because that is when we return - live! LIVE! Get pumped! Explosive alternative and indie rock is on it's way. Only on KUR! Jim and I have been preparing for this epic arrival for over a month, so rest assured, it will be great. We're getting a lot of requests already! That's really sick. We're stepping up to the plate and raising the bar for college radio. Be sure to tune in from 6 to 8 PM (yes, the WHOLE time!) on Friday night. In the meantime, here's a friendly reminder. Hehe.

Cee-Lo Retorts!

I was absolutely shocked to see that John Mayer sent an e-mail in to Mike Pop. As much as I do not like him, he is famous nonetheless and that is pretty badass that out blog is read by people like him.

But not only people like him, apparently the man, myth, and legend Cee-Lo Green also frequents NMtM and saw Mike's post and John's response and had something of his own to say. Here, in its entirety, is Cee-Lo's email to me...

CallMeBigDaddy984@juno.com writes:

My Dearest James,

Thank you ever so kindly for your generous words. I wish I could take all credit for that cover, but Danger Mouse and our band were pretty stellar on it too. And also, don't give Mr. Mayer such a hard time, from what I understand, science is close to proving douchiness is hereditary, so it is out of his control.

On a side note, as I was watering my garden this morning (it helps me focus on my soul and ponder the question of why am I so sexy), I noticed what time of year it was, and while it is very nice here in the south, it must be cold in Kutztown. So I want you to know I am anxiously awaiting the spring premier of NMtM on KUR a week from today. The entire Green family sits around with some friends and some barbeque every week and enjoys the show very much. Keep up the great work gentlemen.

With all Love and Kindness Your Spiritual Brother,

Cee-Lo Green

P.S. Let the love of Cee-Lo keep you warm in all of the winter.

A Response From John Mayer!

This morning, at approximately 7:48 AM, the one and only John Mayer wrote me an e-mail! It was crazy - how did he get it? He must enjoy the blog. Anyway, it goes like this.

JoHnMaYeR_x0x081@hotmail.com writes:

Dear Mike Pop,

Thanks for your kind words. I love to help the children. They are our future. Furthermore, my pop music is not amazing, I'm aware of that. But "Daughters" is a pretty one, right? LOL.

Also, Jim's a mean guy for calling me a douche. Just because I date A-list celebs on the rebound then don't call them back after just one date does NOT make me a bad guy.

Love,

The Mayer of Music (John Mayer LMAO!)

Damn. Strong words from a strong man.

No Thanks!

A Better Cover Than Mike Posted

I like John Mayer just as much as the next guy (assuming the next guy hates John Mayer). So I will say this...

The man can play a mean guitar, I will give him that, but also, he is a douche. And not just on the 'Hey, I'm famous look how much tail I can get' level, but also on the 'Hey, my music doesn't matter as long as my fans are high just like Dave Matthews' school of music' level.

So while I'm on the topic of hating people, let me give someone some love. Cee-Lo Green is fucking great. He is a good father, as evidenced on one episode of My Super Sweet 16, and one hell of a damn singer. So, without further ado, because I can't type as I am more focused on the Lost premiere tonight, here is Cee-Lo and Gnarls Barkley covering Radiohead's "Reckoner"

Phenomenal Cover: John Mayer - "Kid A"

Ah, it feels great to blog again. Especially about whatever I feel like, although, I'm still very ecstatic for our return show coming up at the end of the month. But I'll keep that down for awhile. I have a quick story:

I recently found a treasure. Like a bottle that rushes a shore, this was something to be examined and marveled over. It came to me from a torrent. A FREE torrent, people. It was this amazing cover of one of my favorite songs (and for such few lyrics, it's truly an orchestral masterpiece of surrealism and the supernatural). The tune: Radiohead's "Kid A", the title track from their monumental 2000 record (best record of this bizarre decade, anyone?). Who covered this masterpiece and did such justice to it? John Mayer! ...?

I guess John boy has always been a cooler dude than what his pop music makes him out to be. He plays a lot of soul and blues, which is important, because if you forget rock's roots then your just a dickhead. He's also been on Chapelle's Show and Tim & Eric; so he's a TV star, as well. And lastly on his cool list (I'm sure there's more, like how he gets with amazingly hot chicks as the ultimate rebound man, but...) he does benefits! Really, really nice benefits!

I took this crappy picture from my crappy phone cirva Christmas time 2008. I was working with New York's 95.5 WPLJ, where I had interned this summer, on an extroadinary benefit at Blythedale's Children's Hospital in Valhalla, NY. Granted I chipped my tooth the night before (don't ask) and I got like, no sleep (waking up at 2 AM...that's when I usually go to bed!), it was a great thing to be apart of. Here's John acousta-rockin' out with Matchbox 20's prodigal son, Rob Thomas.

I told Rob I was his biggest fan. I lied, but only to get this picture. I think he would've gotten in it even if I wasn't a lying jerk, but I didn't want to blow it. Also, I really did enjoy 1996's Yourself Or Someone Like You. "3 AM", great tune. I don't care who you are; it's good.

So anyway, back to my main point. John Mayer covers Radiohead's "Kid A". This wasn't realeased on any compilation of anything, but shitty CW or ABC Family teen dramas should pick it up if they haven't already (I only watch The Colbert Report religiously. I saw that show live over break, too! Epic.). It's a great cover, it truly is. He doesn't piss on it or add any unessecary moans, trying to be like Thom Yorke, who he most certainly is not. But it's majestic in its own right. John hits every emotion, just as much as Radiohead did. I'm not sure anyone will truely ever understand the more profound meaning behind "Kid A" that we all know is out there. Whether or not Thom had writer's block at the time, this allegory of leaving a strange town as a wayward soul is solitified as ambient genuisness. A+ to you Radiohead. And an A to you John Mayer, for not being such a cool dude and realizing the true rock 'n' roll of the times.

Rats and children follow me out town...

We Got Our Schedule! Same As Before! Repitition!

Believe it or not, this little number was a painstakingly long process.
I need to hire someone to do legit Photoshop jobs for us.

Wait: Blurry, too? Fuck this...

Okay, so some important things happened today:

1. President-elect Obama got sworn into office.
C-ya later, Bush. You were absolutely horrendous.

2. Ted Kennedy's health is sinking fast.
Another dead Kennedy. Not good.

3. Oh, and NEVER MIND THE FUCKING MAINSTREAM IS BACK!!!

!!!

We're excited. Can you tell? You know what's also sweet? I don't have to re-write too much, because we're on at the same time and day as last semester! Lucky us. But more importantly, luck you. What a momentous day. Fun posters and music news to come. People, nation, citizens, rock lovers, enjoy this hand-me-down post while I go grab a beer:

We got a pretty solid time slot and we're going to use it to the best of our advantage. Now, we're only on once a week, so get your alternative and indie rock dosage when you can. Here it is:

Every Friday: 6-8 PM!

Wanna know how to listen? Of course you do. Here are all the fascinating ways you can do so:

88.3 FM & 1670 AM (If you're in the Kutztown, PA area)
Service Electric Channel 24 (Kutztown, PA)
Hometown Utilicom Channel 41 (Kutztown, PA)
On The Web (via our web stream) @ http://kur.kutztown.edu

The Top 6: Swedish Musicians

This is something I am going to try to do weekly or every other week. I will put a Top 6 of something, just about anything. Why Top 6? Well other than the fact that I said so, five just never seems to be enough.

Today's Top 6: Swedish Musicians

The great Nordic land of Sweden has given birth to more good bands than just ABBA and The Hives, and better ones too. So what else is cool about Sweden? Well, it is the land where dynamite and the blowtorch were invented, ironically along with the seat belt and safety match. It is Nordic, which is cool enough, plus their King looks like Randy Quaid.

"Welcome to Sweden, shitter was full."

S
o without further ado, here are the top six musicians from Sweden, in no particular order (video evidence at bottom of post.)

The Knife

This brother/sister electronic duo may be most commonly known for writing "Heartbeats," a song which was made famous by another Swede Jose Gonzalez, their unique brand of electro funk tunes is worthy of listening to no matter what country you're from.

Key Tracks: "Heartbeats", "We Share Our Mothers' Health"

Lykke Li

Although the 22 year old singer just made her first album this year, she's already made a splash in the indie music scene. Her Björn Yttling (of Peter, Björn, and John) produced album Youth Novels came out just barely a year ago to critical acclaim. Listen to her all you want, just don't ask me to pronounce her name.

Key Tracks: "Dance Dance Dance", "I'm Good, I'm Gone"

The Sounds

The Sounds are your new go-to band for party music that fits perfectly in the background, but is good enough that your friends will all come up to you and ask who it is. Their two albums are so chock full of indie pop-rock that you'll forget they aren't from England. Take one point off for having a song in a Geico commercial, but add that point back for it being a damn good song.

Key Tracks: "Painted by Numbers", "Dance With Me"

I'm From Barcelona

By far the biggest band on this list, (they clock in at 29 members) you could guess by the post title, this band isn't actually from Barcelona. They started as a one man project that he just so happened to want every one of his friends to be on. The indie/folk/indie pop group released their 2nd album, Who Killed Harry Houdini? in 2008.

Key Tracks: "We're From Barcelona", "Music Killed Me"

Jose Gonzalez

This Swedish but born to Argentenian parents folkster sings in English, his third language. Though most known for "Heartbeats" as mentioned earlier, he also spent some time playing with British group Zero 7 on the album The Garden. He has also covered Kylie Minogue ("Hand on my Heart") and Joy Division ("Love Will Tear Us Apart") to stunning effect.

Key Tracks: "Crosses", "Left Behind (With Zero 7)"

The Tallest Man On Earth

Real name: Kristian Matsson. This very Dylan-esque singer/songwriter has a raw power in his voice and guitar playing that makes you want to feel what he feels. Whether he wants to kill the people keeping him from his love ("The Gardner") or kill the girl herself, ("Where Do My Bluebird Fly?") you can tell he means what he says, which makes him all the more wonderful.

Key Tracks: "Where Do My Bluebird Fly", "Pistol Dream"

The Knife - Heartbeats

Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance

The Sounds - Painted By Numbers

I'm From Barcelona - We're From Barcelona

Jose Gonzalez - Crosses

The Tallest Man On Earth - The Gardner

KUR Student Shows Go Live Next Monday!

Where the hell are we in this picture?

We're one week away from the students getting back into the KUR studio, folks. A lot of close friends of mine are getting excited to be back on the air, and for Never Mind the Mainstream, we have a lot of big plans. Like, a live band? Sick in the head, right? It's going to be epic. Keep it here for further updates. Also - requests? Comment and let us know!

Biz Caz Fri? Fri OFF!

I have Fridays off this semester. And while I have nothing else to really blog about, because we're not on the air yet and the year is too young to review new music (not like we do much of that around here anyway), I'm going to talk about Friday.

Simply put, Friday is a great day. And though I'm on campus from 9 AM to 8 PM on Thursdays, sleeping in til 12 noon totally redeems that. Ah...what to do with all this free time while I wait for the kids to come home from school?

Friday. I love you.

The Cure knows how much the work week sucks,
but darn tootin' Friday is so sweet.

The NMtM Crew Is Back @ The Big KU!

BELIEVE IT.

Hello all. This is the return...of THE BLOB!

I meant BLOG, not BLOB. Either or: scary stuff.

Well, another semester of college is at foot. Jim's tackling his last semester as a sophomore and I'm finishing out my junior year. Things are getting hectic already - meaning, crazy class schedules, the workload piling on, and stress out the wazoo. Kind of sucky, right? Not fair, eh? I agree. It has to get done though. My schedule makes me feel like an old man who hates his cubicle job, basically because I have a class in the same room for 4 HOURS! Insane. And that's the way my mind will go after the third week...probably.

I'll tell you what's a great relief: Rock Band 2.

Rock-rock-rock-a-way beach!

Rock Band 2 is an amazing game. I feel like such a freeloader because I just play my friends games, but I think I'd go out and buy a brand new video game system just for this game if I had to. Luckily, I got good, sharing friends. So many good songs. Here are my Top 5. Granted you can download more, but hey, Christmas season just ended!

5. Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Where'd You Go? (Rock band ska? Been a long time comin'!)
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away
3. The Replacements - Alex Chilton (Thank the good Lord this song made the game.)
2. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
1. Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer (Oh, Jersey.)

Agree? Disagree? Play the game and let me know what you think!

In Never Mind the Mainstream related-news, and KUR news, I guess: Jim and I have sent in our free times and should know when we're on by next week. Let's cross our fingers that it's the same timeslot - that's prime time! KUR has a lot of enthusiastic kids on board and we're going to try out some new ideas, which I'll post on this blog. But in the mean time, go to the web site and click through the forums. Let's make those forums light up with posts, ya' know?!

We're glad to be back online and posting again. We're going to try not be lazy, but what do you expect? We're college kids. I'd rather have a beer then type more than I had to...unless something was on my mind. Haha.

Show reviews to come! As well as Jim's lists! Keep it here at this blog for awesome indie, alternative, and radio news! Peace!

P.S. I met John Mayer and Rob Thomas around Christmas time with 95.5 WPLJ out of New York City at some children's hopsital benefit. I'm such a nice guy for volunteering. No modesty on this blog. Anyway, John was eh... like most of you would predict, but Rob was cool. He called me brother (Hulk Hogan - sue him! You need the money!). He was once an alternative rock artists, right? 3 A.M.? Push? Smooth? Meh. I'll post a picture soon, if I can find one.

Why My Top 30 Songs & Top 10 Albums Haven't Been Posted

Hello All,

My plan was to post my Top 30 Songs the day after Christmas and my Top 10 albums today. However, I got a new hard drive for Christmas and in transferring my music over, four thousand songs kind of vanished. My iTunes is in shambles and I have to manually add in 20,000 songs back into the iTunes. Should be fun for me. Anyway, that's why the lists aren't here and I hope to have this all straightened out soon. Meanwhile, enjoy two concert reviews coming in the next week.
